Charlie Banner KC is barrister at Keating Chambers and a working peer. He has acted in over 200 reported court cases including 18 Supreme Court appeals (one of the top ten practising silks by number of appearances in the Supreme Court). He has been ranked by all the legal directories as one of the UK’s leading barristers for many years, and has been the recipient of many legal awards. He sits part-time judicially as a Justice of the Astana International Finance Centre Court in Kazakhstan.
He has held non-executive board positions at the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the EU Fundamental Rights Agency, the Joint Nature Conservation Committee (including as Chair) and the SAV Group.
Much of his work as a barrister involves promoting housing and infrastructure developments through the planning process. Projects of note include Crossrail (the Elizabeth Line), HS2, Heathrow Airport 3rd runway, Stansted Airport Expansion, the North-South Ireland Interconnector, Casement Park stadium, East Anglia Pylons, new settlements such as Dunsfold Park, and numerous tall buildings in London and other major cities.
In February 2024, he was appointed by the Prime Minister to undertake a review of legal challenges to nationally significant infrastructure projects, which reported in May 2024.
He is the creator and co-presenter of the high-profile planning podcast, ‘Have We Got Planning News For You’. His work to date in the House of Lords has focused on streamlining the planning process.
